Veterinary Opportunities
New Grads!
* Are you looking for a truly mixed practice experience?
* Would you love to ride shot gun with a vet of 20 years experience who is still truly passionate about every aspect of general practice for the first 3 months?
* Do you have the spirit of adventure and want to experience the best of North Queensland?
GAVS is looking for a passionate and motivated new grad to add to our growing team. We are committed to your personal and professional development and can’t wait to see you thrive as a vet.
Our workload is split evenly between smallies and large animals our aim is to have all vets doing an equal share of large animal work so you won’t be left in the clinic while the experienced vets are out having all the fun.
Being in a rural area, our clients are appreciative they have access to a vet and there is less emotional pressure than you may find in suburban or city practices. We love our clients and they love, respect and support us in return.
We do offer after hours emergency services to our clients but our call out rate is very low (approximately 2 cases per week). I see on call as an opportunity to earn good monetary bonuses as well as getting the thrill of doing the exciting emergency medicine and surgery that rarely occurs during office hours. We have nurses rostered on weekends to help you manage cases.

Experienced Mixed Practice Vet
My Why….
I’m not going to start with the standard “Hi, I’m Dr Libby and blah blah…” because that’s not what we are about in North Queensland. Life in NQ has a reputation for being laid back with a backdrop of hard work. My full name is actually “Libby the Vet” as that is how I am affectionately known to many of my clients who have now become firm friends.
I have always said that people get nicer the further north you go and that is definitely true for our clients. Hughenden is hundreds of miles from the nearest city and referral vet centre but that’s what adds to the charm of working in a remote setting. We have clients that will fly to Brisbane to see a specialist but for many of those who don’t, we get to try the “fun stuff”. Our clients are willing for us to attempt a new surgery without judgement and are immensely grateful for all that we do. We travel to more remote towns and are greeted like old friends who are so glad that we have visited. All of this comes with a deep respect for my knowledge and knowing that I am a valued part of this community.
I am deeply committed to bringing Gold Standard veterinary care to the bush. There is no reason why we can’t offer the animals out here the same standards as on the coast. I am a continuing ed junkie and love learning the next new advancements in medicine and surgery and encourage my team to do likewise.
I love the fact that I can preg test 1000 cows one day, breed a mare the next and plate a femur on a dog that afternoon. I’ll never be bored or lose enthusiasm for my job as there is always room for professional growth and gratitude from my clients.
Some of our days are long and involve a lot of driving but the best bit about that is the amazing sunrises and sunsets and smokos provided by clients. That doesn’t mean that you will miss out on smoko on the days you are in clinic. It’s an important part of our culture to sit as a team and have a quick cuppa before the rest of the day (sometimes) goes to chaos. Our small animal load in the main clinic is easily managed so you have time to work up cases fully and develop a strong rapport with the clients, without having to stay back late doing histories and invoicing.
I am looking for an experienced vet or enthusiastic new grad to complete our team. Experienced salary starting at $100,000, new graduates from $70,000 plus after hours and on call bonuses. Working roster is a 8 day fortnight plus share of on call.
Please call me on 0428716458 or email libby@greatartesianvets.net if you wish to know more.
